Helping Build A Better Bucks

Gallows Run Watershed Association

The Stream Team

The Palisades Stream Team first came together in the fall of 2005. As freshmen and sophomores they attended the series of workshops hosted by Gallows Run Watershed Association and then began to work as a group under the supervision of Ms. Pat Raynock, Palisades Biology Teacher, Suzanne Forbes, Planner and William Brokaw, GIS professional. They conducted field surveys, prepared a data base and assisted with the GIS maps that were used for the Gallows Run Watershed Restoration Plan. The Plan, along with the maps they helped create, were submitted to the PADEP as part of a Growing Green grant.

The Stream Team submitted a summary of their work in the international Volvo Adventure Competition and were named as finalists. In 2006, they teamed up with the Cooks Creek Watershed Association for headwater mapping and conducted stream sample testing along the Gallows Run.

The group recognized the need to raise community awareness regarding stream issues and took the initiative to create a brochure for landowners who are blessed with a stream running through their property. The brochure was printed with generous support from the Penny Power and is available free of charge at the Nockamixon Township building. The Heritage Conservancy recognized the efforts of the Stream Team and awarded them the Young Conservationists of the Year Award for 2006.

The Stream Team is currently working on implementing stream restoration activities. Their current project is the creation of a riparian buffer. They will use their experience from this project to help further educate landowners on actions actions they can take in their own backyards to improve our environment.

There are currently six members to the Gallows Run Stream Team: Alyson Brokaw (senior), Jennifer Brown (junior), Chelsea Brandau (junior), Taylor Onisky( junior)and Julia Brokaw (freshman).

The GRWA website is in the process of being updated and improved by the Stream Team and GRWA vollunteers. We look forward to providing the community with more information and features in the coming months.
